I want to build an EDH deck

i want to play EDH, but i don't have a deck. So here is my question to all of you EDH lovers out there. what is a good general to base an EDH deck around? i was thinking of the planar chaos dragons but i wasn't sure if they where good enough to be a general.

It really depends on what colors you want to play. For the planar chaos dragons, Vorosh and Teneb are the most popular. Both are quite good by themselves and provide access to good color combinations for cards. My personal favorite EDH deck is my monoblack big mana deck with Oona and a bunch of different fun win cons via having a ton of black mana.

Overall though, it comes down to what colors you want to play and how you want your deck to run. The Wizards forum for EDH has a few really good starting topics for choosing a general and good cards for each color. The threads are stickied at the top of the forum.

Just come one Sunday and i'll hook you up with a deck. If you don't like that idea though, i took a lot of my older crap to GbJ and they are selling uncommons for a buck and commons for 25 cents. there are a few rares but nothing amazing. Anyway, check out some of the lists for the best cards for edh (its suprising, but you should check it out), then try and find the most reasonable ones for you to get. It really is a format where being creative can shine, check out the Rubina Soulsinger thread ;-) The fun here is to try out whatever seems like a cool trick, but is hard to pull off. Those really stupid convoluted combos really shine in EDH. Ask Tyler about getting an Island turned into a creature and then seeing it get Eradicated. MUAHAHAHA. Or you can ask nick and Alex how it feels to be at the mercy of permanents they can't even touch. WHAHAAHAHAHAHA. I LOVE EDH!

I was thinking about getting in on the fun too, how does Sharum sound for a general?? I think that are a lot of fun tricks that i could come up with because of her insane ability....gaddock teeg was another one i was kind of thinking about, but i'm not to sure about that one either.

Running Sharuum puts a huge target on your head...because you CAN do ridiculous things with her. Her along with a few other generals (Momir Vig, Zur, Jhoira, Rofellos, Hokori, and some others) make you the target of a lot of hate from the rest of the table.

You could play Shauku, Endbringer. She is Terrible. But she's a vamp, so you could play cards like blood tribute with her and be pretty well off. I'd want to give her shroud so you can exile creatures without regard to her safety. I'd use lightning greaves, maybe whispersilk cloak. Equipment is way good in a format where you are guaranteed to have a creature. Mono-black would also allow you to play cards like tendrils of corruption, corrupt, Cabal Coffers, lake of the dead, and a lot of other great cards. MonoColor EDH is pretty awesome!

wow haha, she is bad...but i like the idea of mono black alot, i did vote my favorite color as black. I could play things like nightmare too. it could be a really fun idea, anybody happen to have one?

I really think EDH is one of the formats that harbors control/lockdown decks very well, unlike today's standard enviornment. Although, if people realise this early on, they can all gang up on the lockdown player and take him/her out before they build up enough steam to take control. It seems like big combo decks and midrange decks can steal some wins as long as people haven't seen your combo too many times before. EDH is a very democratic format. Checks and balances...

I have decided that my general will be Gaddock Teeg. Because he seems really run, i could maybe try to run it a little control, but wow 100 cards is a lot and my extended supply is limited to say the least. So I have two questions....1) What are some good green or white cards that i could play? (I totally want to play mana tithe) 2) How many lands does a typical deck run?

Gaddock Teeg should've been on the list I mentioned above. People hate that guy b/c he shuts off 75-85% of most EDH decks and makes a lot of games just unfun in a multiplayer environment. Just sayin...

If you really want to play with him though, just find a bunch of spells that don't have an X in their cost and don't cost more than 4 obviously. Find a way to give Teeg shroud or indesctructability (*coughshieldoftheoversoulcough*) and, BOOM, you win...congrats. For creatures, really you can throw in any green/white ones you want. For anything green, I always start with Eternal Witness, Woodfall Primus, and Genesis. Definitely include Condemn in your list, as it is one of the few ways to effectively deal with generals on a long term scale.

I could try to build an EDH deck with Gaddock Teeg, People would probably get pissed off but i think i would have a good time ha. It's kind of too bad that indestructibility costs 4, but with all of the other cards i think that it could work. Which cards are legal to use in EDH?

Playing teeg will get you a lot of hatred, but not anymore than some of the other generals. We already have a Sharuum and Teferi in our playgroup, and even sliver queen, rofellos, and a few other i can't think of that have a big effect on the gamestate when it comes out.

Edh is Vintage legal, so basically you can use ANYTHING except a few banned cards. (Ante cards, power nine, and ones that are particularly debilitating to the format, the link is on the EDH rules thread, there you can find the banned list specific to this format.)

Your first deck may not be gamebreaking, but the multiplayer aspect makes it possible for you to play such a way that you would just wait out the other players, then play teeg for the remainder of the duel. There are a lot of ways to play with a general, sometimes just using it to get those colors of mana and nothing else.

Another key to edh is never to rely too heavily on one thing, fill your deck with multiple ways out. Lucky for you, a lot of artifact/enchantment destruction in GW is under 4 mana. I could see this being a fun deck to play with.

So what do you think some good win cons for the deck would be? Things like oversoul of dusk, the gw guys from guild pack maybe, baneslayer, any vintage cards that stand out in your mind?

WAkroma? Multani, Maro-Sorcerer? A lot of Angels are good finishers. You might benefit from running some amount of mass token generation. There is Verdeloth the Ancient. Running Garruk, Elspeth, and Ajani could all be beneficial too (even though your teeg stops them, the odds of teeg surviving for very long are pretty slim even in this format.) It really is up to you what you want to do to to win, the options are literally endless. But if you are hellbent on Teeg you my think of running a heavy creature build, but everyone will have a way to deal with creatures, so keep that in mind.

I see I see, so what are some low cost spells that aren't creatures and could do some wicked things in a deck?

Well i'd put Behemoth Sledge in for sure. Then after that, i'd load up on spot removal and any mass destruction at those costs. Swords to plowshares, Path to Exile, tempest of light/tranquility, Crumble, tel jilad justice, Dust to Dust, Condemn, Devouring Light, Erase, Radiant's Judgment, Reprisal, Repentance, Prison Term, Congregation at Dawn, Worldly/Enlightened Tutor, probably some ramp spells like Kodama's Reach, Sakura Tribe Elder, anything that lets you search up two lands is worth it. And as far as lands go, you have to play Vitu Ghazi. I might consider a card like "Hall of Gemstones" in a deck like this to stop other people from doing anything on my turn (counter-wise). I'd play that giant wurm from Ravnica too, and there are a few green and white cards that return creatures to your hand/play. They are more expensive than 4 generally, but they are definately good in a deck that utilizes big fat creatures.

Alright, so i have quite a bit of building to do. I really like the ramp idea getting into big creatures. I wanted to go a bit more control, but it seems like the best way to do things would be ramping to big fatties. Should i look at something like reborn hope? how many lands do i need?

between 40 and 50 lands should be good, 50 would be too much though. If you are playing ramp 42-45 should be fine.

Alright, so I'm going to want to play wooded bastion, brush land, sunpedal grove, should i play the green fetches or maybe oran rief? A could play a pendle haven, an emeria the sky ruin, some token generators maybe, with elspeth and garruk that could be really cool i think. Maybe capitan of the watch, glory or warfare, honor of the pure, conquerers pledge, cloud goat ranger, spectral procession, but idk maybe i should just go mono white and forget about Gaddock, what could a cool white general be?

There really aren't that many great mono-white generals, since all the bomby-angels come down so late and all the early game generals are kind of lack-luster (Check out Orim, Samite Healer). I'd stick with your plan for now, 40 some lands will let you trigger emeria pretty consistantly still, especially playing some ramp. Weathered Wayfarer especially fits in here.

I really do like the weathered wayfinder, that would be really fun, and as long as i'm on that track how would knight of the reliquary or knight of the white orchard turn out?
